Candidate for Vice President / President-Elect

Background and Qualifications:

  • Active member of NELA for 25 years.
  • Chaired the Media Section twice, and has continued to be active in the Information Technology Section (ITS), a group he founded combining the Media Section and NEMICRO.
  • The ITS has been active in NELA for 12 years and Rick has chaired it twice, bringing his knowledge of technology and long time membership in NELA together.
  • As an employee of the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners and an ITS member he has spoken on various media and technology topics for NELA, the Massachusetts Library Association, the Maine Library Association and the New Hampshire Library Association. He is well known throughout New England as a leader in technology training.
  • Rick started at the Emerson College Library managing their Media Center, worked at the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners for 25 years.
  • Rick’s long-term experience in NELA, his knowledge of the various library types and his organizational skills would greatly benefit the association.

Duties of the Vice President / President-Elect:

  1. Substitutes for the President in President's absence.
  2. Becomes Acting President upon death, resignation, or other incapacity of the President.
  3. Presides upon request of President if President wishes to step down from the chair.
  4. Serves as a member of the Administrative Committee, Executive Board and Finance Committee.
  5. As Chair of the annual conference, is in charge of Conference Planning Committee (responsible to the Executive Board).
  6. As directed by President, meets with contractors and other officers to evaluate contractor responsibilities and performance.

Statement:

I am running for a second term as NELA Secretary. It’s a job I truly love and hope to continue serving the organization to the best of my abilities. I genuinely believe in the importance of thoroughly recording the events of the organization for both current use and historical purposes. My writing skills and attention to accuracy make me a strong candidate for this position. I have a deep respect for the leadership of NELA and desire to see the Association continue to advance the interests of its members. I am honored to be re-nominated to serve the New England Library Association.

Duties of the Secretary:

  1. Serves as a member of the Administrative Committee and the Executive Board.
  2. Records minutes of all Administrative Committee and Executive Board meetings.
  3. Records minutes of annual business meeting.
  4. Prepares minutes for distribution or publication within 2 weeks.

Statement:

I first served on the NELA Board as the Vermont Representative and I feel privileged to be nominated to serve again as Junior Director. My hope is that NELA will garner more recognition and respect in all the New England states by providing educational opportunities, through their conferences and workshops, that will address and support the needs and aspirations of all librarians.

Duties of the Junior Director:

Note: The Junior Director serves a two-year term, the first year designated "Junior Director", and the second year designated "Senior Director".

  1. Shall be responsible for the sections and special interest groups. The Directors will orient new section and special interest group chairs to the workings of the Association and the Executive Board, serve in a coordinating and advisory capacity to the sections and special interest groups, and serve as liaison between section and special interest group chairs and the Executive Secretary, as needed. The first year of the term the director is designated Junior Director. The second year of the term the director is designated Senior Director.
  2. Directors serve as members of the Administrative Committee and the Executive Board.
  3. Perform such special duties at the annual conference and during Association year as are assigned by the President.
  4. Serve on Conference Planning Committee.
  5. The Senior Director maintains the Policy and Procedure Manual by tracking changes throughout the year, bringing a list of actual and proposed changes to the Administrative Committee in August for discussion and submitting the accepted changes to the Executive Secretary for revision of the manual in September.
  6. The Junior Director arranges one program to be sponsored by NELA at the annual conference of each of the six New England state library associations by bringing proposed ideas to the Executive Board in July.
  7. The Junior Director assists the Senior Director in tracking proposed manual changes and communicating with sections and committees.
  8. The Directors will communicate and meet with each Section and Committee as necessary.
