Statement:

It never occurred to me to become anything but a librarian.  I volunteered in my high school library and even my Bachelor’s Degree is in Library Science and Instructional Technology from Southern Connecticut State University.  I passionately believe in the mission of libraries, now more than ever in the age of the Internet, a soft economy and competition from all manner of private sources.  Libraries need to work together to improve our customer service and outreach within our communities and learn how to best market ourselves and our services to remain vital for the future.  We need to mentor each other and strengthen our relationships so that we can advocate for ourselves at all times.  I have been a long time, staunch supporter of NELA and NHLA and I’m committed to our professional organizations because they allow us to share our expertise and experience as well as promote the professionalism of librarianship.  Our conferences, workshops and support of continuing education all help us to work together and advocate for our future.  I believe as NELA Junior Director I can use my passion for the good of our organization and our libraries.

                                                                        – NELA Bylaws

In the interests of full disclosure, I start with a confession.  For years I have engaged in a marital relationship with a former NELA president.  However, unlike many of the celebrities whose woes are thrust into our lives, I do not consider an apology is necessary, or even warranted.  I’m in love, and that’s all there is to be said on the subject.  So, to move on …

As a NELA Director in times of limited resources and declining membership, I will assiduously support expending our time, talent and treasure on those activities, new and existing, that further NELA’s stated mission.  I will just as vigorously oppose those activities, new and existing, that do not.

Duties of the Junior Director:

Shall be responsible for the sections and special interest groups. The Directors will orient new section and special interest group chairs to the workings of the Association and the Executive Board, serve in a coordinating and advisory capacity to the sections and special interest groups, and serve as liaison between section and special interest group chairs and the Executive Secretary, as needed. The first year of the term the director is designated Junior Director. The second year of the term the director is designated Senior Director.

The Junior Director arranges one program to be sponsored by NELA at the annual conference of each of the six New England state library associations by bringing proposed ideas to the Executive Board in July.

The Junior Director assists the Senior Director in tracking proposed manual changes and communicating with sections and committees.

The Directors will communicate and meet with each Section and Committee as necessary.
