A New England library

NELA News – February 2008

February is a busy news month for NELA.

DUES – In January all members should have received a paper mailing with your annual membership renewal. Thank you to everyone who has sent theirs in already. If you haven't, you have three choices: 1) find the mailing in your "pile", 2) register electronically at https://nelibrary.ejoinme.org/MyPages/nelamembership/tabid/5821/Default.aspx or 3) print out a new form at http://www.nelib.org/membership/membershipform-2008.pdf and mail it in. Dues are for the calendar year and will give you discounts at the conference and access to the NELA listservs. Of course, getting to know colleagues all over New England is the best reason to maintain your membership.

BALLOTS – With your membership mailing you also received a ballot for some changes to our by-laws. The changes will affect the make-up of the Executive board, the number of years our Presidents serve in various positions, and the ability of the organization to offer electronic balloting in the future. These are important issues so we need your vote. The deadline for voting on the by-law changes is February 21. Please send in your ballot if you haven't already done so.

CALENDAR – There are three spring conferences on the calendar. They are coming up soon and registrations are open for two of them.

  • "Spooks, Secrets and Sleuths: Mystery in Teen and Children's Literature" is the NERTCL Spring Symposium. The date is March 20, a Thursday to avoid Good Friday; the place is Worcester State College. All the details and the registration form are at http://www.nelib.org/nertcl/conf2008-flyer.pdf
  • Cohabiting and Colliding: Print and Electronic Resources is NETSL's spring conference on Friday, April 4 at the College of the Holy Cross. Information is posted at http://nelib.org/netsl/ and more details are coming.
  • "Licensing Electronic Resources" is a conference co-sponsored by NETSL. The dates are March 3 at the College of the Holy Cross and March 4 at Dartmouth College. The details are at http://nelib.org/netsl/licensingelectronicresources.htm

CONTINUING EDUCATION – The deadline for submitting applications to NELLS for a wonderful continuing education opportunity this summer has been extended to March 14, 2008. All the information you need to apply is at http://nelib.org/nells.

GREENAWAY AWARD – NELA has a very special award which is presented at the annual conference. It is the Emerson Greenaway Distinguished Service Award for Librarianship. The committee is now accepting recommendations for this award. You can find a description of the award, criteria, and the nomination process at http://nelib.org/greenaway.

I hope everyone is able to take advantage of at least one of our many offerings this spring.

Chair, NELA Publications Committee
