The NELA Educational Assistance Committee is pleased to announce the 2008 Scholarships:

Scholarships of $2000 for full-time students go to:

  • Kimberly Giedd (Simmons College) - Ms. Giedd plans to be an academic librarian, with a strong interest in reference and user instruction, and hopes "to assist as many undergraduate students" as she can.
  • Alison Messier (Univ. of RI) - Ms. Messier also plans to work in an academic library, in reference or technical services, preferably in the Boston area.

Scholarships of $1000 for part-time students go to:

  • Patrick Borezo (Simmons College) - Mr. Borezo is planning a career in cataloging and the opportunities presented by emerging technologies.
  • Marilyn Hines (Univ. of RI) - Ms. Hines' volunteer experience at her children's poorly-funded school library has led her to a clearly defined plan to become a School Library Media Specialist after completing her MLIS.

Congratulations to our winning scholars.

NELLS (New England Library Leadership Symposium) will convene July 28-August 1

Twenty-five students and six mentors from all the New England states will be attending. NELLS is an intensive 4-day library leadership retreat designed for up and coming library leaders who are interested in working with library associations, both state and regional. NELLS has been created through a cooperative effort of the New England Library Association and all six New England state library associations. Four of the students are sponsored by NELA and the rest come from the New England state associations. Our representatives are: Jean Amaral, Antioch Univ. New England, Keene, NH; Katherine Lussier, SEMLS, Lakeview, MA; Elizabeth Sturges, Cambridge Public Library, MA; Emily Zervas, Rockingham Free Public Library, Bellows Falls, VT. If the past is any predictor of the future then they will have a wonderful time learning their leadership styles, the role of leaders in managing change, and ways to develop their full potential as leaders. More information on NELLS can be found on the NELA website at http://nelib.org/nells, or on the NELLS wiki at http://nells08.pbwiki.com/.
