Around New EnglandMaine - Librarians from all three Maine Library Districts met for a one day conference at the Augusta Civic Center on October 30, 2009. This allowed the three District Consultants, Maine State Library and the Maine Library Association to share expenses and maximize attendance. We were treated to the very informative and helpful program “How to Build a Neighborhood/Community One Hello at a Time” by Pat Wagner from Pattern Research Inc. The Maine Library Association held its annual meeting after the program ended. Massachusetts - On Wednesday, November 4, 2009 Librarians from all across Massachusetts held a rally at the State House in Boston. “Don’t Close the Books on Libraries” was the theme and the message was people rely on libraries more than ever in times of economic unrest. This was in response to the MBLC (Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners) budget being cut by 16 percent. The MLA PR Committee is seeking nominations for inductees to the Massachusetts Library Association’s Hall of Fame in 2010. Rhode Island - The RILA Executive Board issued a resolution calling on Congress to dramatically revise the up-for-renewal USA PATRIOT Act that also addresses the abuse of Section 215, known as the “library provision.” and Section 505, National Security Letters. RILA is sponsoring a Legislative Action retreat on 12/5/09 for RILA, Rhode Island Educational Media Association (RIEMA), Coalition of Library Advocates (COLA), Higher Education Library Information Network (HELIN) and other R.I. organizations to discuss collaboration and learn how to reach local officials. Vermont - Planning for the 116th Vermont Library Conference is nearly complete. The one-day conference will take place on Tuesday, May 25, 2010, at Saint Michael’s College.
