Below are the details on the programs offered this year. The NELA Executive Board has voted to give a $5.00 coupon to anyone with a paid registration for a spring 2010 stand-alone conference. The coupon can be used as credit toward registration for the Annual Conference in the fall. “Crosswalks to the Future: Library Metadata on the Move”, NETSL’s Spring Conference, will take place on Thursday, April 15, 2010, at the Hogan Campus Center, College of the Holy Cross, in Worcester. Dr. Barbara B. Tillett, Chief of the Policy and Standards Division at the Library of Congress, will kick off the conference with a discussion “Building Blocks for the Future: Making Controlled Vocabularies Available for the Semantic Web”. Jon Orwant, Engineering Manager for Google Books, will conclude the day with a talk on “Creating a Trillion-Field Catalog: Metadata in Google Books”. In between, the conference will offer six breakout sessions. A delectable breakfast spread and a delicious lunch buffet, including vegan options, are included. Speakers will be T.A. Barron (Lost Years of Merlin, Merlin’s Dragon trilogy), Melanie Kimball (Assistant Professor, Simmons College Graduate School of Library Science) and Sarah Thomson (The Blue Stone, Imagine a Place). Each year, our Nominations Committee works to identify candidates for Officers on the NELA Executive Board. If you would like to be more active in NELA or know someone who would like to serve the organization, please let us know. Send a candidate statement by March 20 to nominating@nelib.org. The open positions to be filled by election of the membership later this year are the following: Vice President/President Elect, Secretary, Junior Director. Each year at our Annual Conference NELA presents this award to recognize an exceptional librarian who has had a "demonstrated impact on the library field in the New England region.” If you would like to nominate someone for this award, please submit the 2010 Emerson Greenaway Nomination Form by June 1, 2010. Educational Assistance: Deadline March 15. Need money for library school? NELA offers scholarships for New England residents working on a Master’s degree in Library Science.
