State Conferences on the Spring Calendar

Five states have conferences this spring. Connecticut leads the way with Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont following and Rhode Island concluding the programming offered.  All of them are linked on our web page www.nelib.org.

Around New England       Cooperative Efforts a Common Theme

Vermont

VLA, the Green Mountain Library Consortium, and the Vermont Consortium of Academic Libraries are partnering to create an online resource to help libraries fill short term labor needs, whether for special projects or upcoming staff absences. The site is designed to connect people who would be interested in short term library jobs with libraries which need them. Potential workers will provide information about themselves. Watch for this resources in April at the VLA website, www.vermontlibraries.org.

The VT Department of Libraries is working with the VT Telecommunications Authority on a competitive grant application for the American Recovery and Investment Act stimulus funds to build a statewide fiber optic cable network that would bring high-speed broadband to towns across VT and to approximately 50 libraries.

New Hampshire

New Hampshire is planning a Snapshot Day, which will feature a day in the life of New Hampshire libraries.

Massachusetts

The Massachusetts Library Association (MLA) and Massachusetts School Library Association (MSLA) held a joint Legislative Day on Tuesday, March 9 at the State House in Boston.

The MBLC has an FY2011 Legislative Agenda. For more details go to http://mblc.state.ma.us/mblc/legislative/leg-agenda.pdf

Rhode Island

The RILA Bulletin was published online on March 15.

Annual Coalition of Library Advocates event was held at the Rhode Island Statehouse: February 8, 2010. The following day, February 9, the Legislative Action Day was also held at the RI State House. RILA and nine other organizations partnered to sponsor tables and share information about their work and the importance of libraries to the people of Rhode Island. These events were part of a week-long Library Awareness Campaign sponsored by RILA and presented to the Rhode Island Legislators in February. RILA also presented a looping slide show highlighting the diverse activities of the state’s libraries.

Connecticut

The CT State Library fared relatively well in the latest legislative budget proposals, losing only one service---a program providing computers directly to families in poverty areas. Consequently, CLA Legislative action has been very low-key. For the first time in about 30 years, we are not sponsoring legislative breakfasts or suppers, although our lobbyist is still hard at work and the season is far from over. CLA did offer testimony at the appropriate legislative hearings and also sponsored a Snapshot Day to gather information for use in future discussions with legislators.

The second one-day leadership conference co-sponsored by CLA and the CT Library Consortium will be held on July 30 at the University of Hartford and will feature Maureen Sullivan as presenter. The focus of the conference is leadership in general, rather than participation in professional associations.
